Atheists only: belief in an afterlife?

The belief that one could experience thought, consciousness, emotion, memory, sight, etc., after the death of one's brain is simply mind-boggling in its inanity. But such belief is widespread. How do you account for this? Is it fear of death, or pure egotism, or some other explanation that escapes me?
