In farewell to manzanar why did Jeanne aspire to be an orphan?

Jeanne was always fascinated by catechcism. One day while at the Maryknoll church, she witnessed an orphan girl's confirmation. She envied how much attention she got and how she was dressed so beautifully. She was in a state of awe how everyone, especially the adults, treated this orpahn girl like a queen.
