Isn't it a weird world?

Sounds like attempted man slaughter or premeditated murder. How long was it before the person being beaten said "It's me, so and so"? And how long was it before your friend stopped the beating to find out who the person was? Not too weird from this vantage point. I'm all for protecting yourself, but the facts of the story you provided show that he beat a friend of his and is now in jail. What else is there to make it weird?
